Voicing/instrumentation: Reed quintet with optional contrabass clarinet
Composer: Sam Kauffman
Duration: 5:15
Year: 2025

This piece in arch form includes a majestic and foreboding largo, a frenetic allegro, and a spooky adagio. It began its life as a trombone quartet. I then adapted it for woodwinds as a saxophone quartet, which won the 2024 UConn Saxophone Quartet Composition Competition. Now as a reed quintet, it has the added flourishes of a fifth instrument and the full range of colors that a reed quintet offers.

It can be performed with either bass clarinet or contrabass clarinet. I prefer the latter for the floor-shaking foundation it provides.
